Greece - Sparta & The Peloponnese

Introduction

A wonderful coastal walk which allows an exploration of classic landscapes along the Peloponnese coast. It provides a vivid insight into places made famous in ancient literature.

For this new Walk we follow simple tracks winding through olive groves and across wild mountainsides, visit remote villages and sample traditional ways of life. There’s the chance to swim in the intense blue waters of the Aegean and explore lanes and squares bursting with local life.

A highlight of the week will be discovering the royal tholos tombs of King Menelaus of Sparta and his wife Helen, immortalized by Homer’s epic, The Iliad. Dated at 1500BC, the site is well hidden and extremely atmospheric. Other major archaeological sites we encounter include the Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus and the Vaulted Tomb of Vafio, famous for the precious gold and silver artifacts found there.
